Thanksgiving and The Holidays are upon us. I love this time of year. The smell of cinnamon and pine in the stores, deep reds and greens and golds and blues adorning the shop windows and holiday tables. Haunting carols on the radio, and laughter amid the craziness of trying to get it all done and wrapped and baked before Jan 1st pounces. Crisp mornings and nippy nights, cool sun against blinding blue skies or the clickety-clack of warmly welcomed raindrops as they find their way down my window panes. One of my favorite times of year.
As you enjoy your freedom away from work or routine, and as you find renewal in the love of good friends and relatives, I invite you to do one more thing. Just for you.
Step away from the computer. Put down your smart phone. Close the ipad.
Step into your own skin again. Feel the warmth of a crackly fire on your toes. Smell the sweet spiciness of gingerbread. Enjoy the happy cries of children as they discover the fun of sliding on ice. Taste a drifting snowflake or shard of ice crystal, knowing how precious and unique and – indeed – miraculous such things really are. Drink in the sight of gracefully tutued ballerinas pirouetting their way through the Dance of the Sugar Plum, and feel yourself happily spinning with them even if only in your dreams.
Allow yourself to open up to what’s in front of you, behind you, around you. Receive the many gifts this season brings, and that you can only see when you’re grounded in The Present. The present of This Moment, when the birds are singing, the tea is fragrant, and your mother or husband or girlfriend or son is sitting next to you, silently asking you to be with them. Being Present is indeed a present.
Don’t give yourself back to the digital world of the ether too soon. The emails, kitten videos, and Kardashians will still be there when you return. We’ll still love your holiday photos when you post them. For now, grant yourself the freedom and joy of one day or four to Just. Be. You. You Yourself, without the noise of the internet or loss of your soul to the digital world. It’s a much bigger, beautiful, boisterous world Out Here, and one more connected to Your Truest Inner Self. Your Authentic You.
Wishing you happy days of Grace, Gratitude, and Groundedness. Happy Thanksgiving.
